The Plan |
The Plan Well having had major surgery in May 2009 which appears to have cured my acute diabetes and wanting to establish a milestone in my 50th year I foolishly agreed to ride from London to Paris in 3 days, covering a total of 288.75 miles/465Km's in 3 days. Now I used to be quite a successful cyclist in the 70's and early 80's, competing at Crystal Palace, Herne Hill and many National Time Trials, however at the time I was a paltry 9st. 6lbs, whereas at my peak prior to my operation I was 21 1/2 st. I'm now under 14stone and the weight is still coming off. 20 odd other fellow minded cyclist also felt they wanted to do something to be proud of and so the seed was sown. Now what a lot of people don't know is that there are organisations out there that offer a complete package and claim that if you cross their palms with £1200 that they will organise the trip with support drivers and any money left over would go to Charity! In my mind, this was wrong, the challenge was mine and if I could raise some money for charity whilst achieving something worthwhile, then all the better. As a group we are all paying for ourselves and we anticipate it costing £300-350 in total. So all monies I raise, and I mean every single penny will go to the Joshua Foundation which is a charity created in 1998 to provide holidays and experiences for children and their families, where the child is diagnosed with terminal cancer. As a family we have supported this charity for many years and unlike other organisations, everything received goes back to make kids last days better. So, on the 15th June 2010, 23 cyclists from all over the UK will be traveling down to London in preparation to leave Westminster Bridge at 07:30 on the 16th June. We have to be at Dover 80 odd miles away by 15:30 in order to catch the ferry for Calais. Dan my son and a friend called Chappie will be driving/assisting with the support vehicle and patiently playing a game of catch up with us, whilst they wait for us to follow them all the way down to Paris.
